CCBSA gears up for 2014 season

Feb. 27: Another great year is gearing up for the Calvert City Baseball/Softball Association. We invite you to join the FUN and Sportsmanship of CCBSA as we provide education and instruction in the fundamentals of baseball and softball.

Marshall County Soccer Sign-ups
Feb. 28: Marshall County Soccer Association is now accepting signups for the spring season. Children as young as 3 can play on small-sided, small-field teams. You may go to Gattiland in Draffenville on Friday, February February 28 from 6-8 pm. For more information visit www.mcsa.cornerkicksystems.com .
Marshall County/Benton Baseball, Softball sign-ups will be held:
March 1, at Hibbetts in Benton, 10 a.m. – noon
March 8 and 22 at Dairy Queen in Benton, 10 a.m. – noon
March 13 at Gatti's in Draffenville, 5 – 7 p.m.
Leagues begin at age 3 for both Baseball and Softball.
Glaze-A-Thons jump start Empty Bowl Project
The 2014 Empty Bowl Project will be held on Saturday, April 19, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Marshall County High School in the Commons Area. Tickets are $15 in advance and also at the door.
To make this event exciting and BIG success, organizers would like to have 700 hand-painted ceramic bowls. Glaze-a-Thons have been scheduled for everyone that is interested. No artistic skills needed, someone will be there to instruct you in how to glaze your bowls. Bowl prices start at $10. Call Grace Forte if you have questions at 270-205-0223.
March 1: 2nd Glaze-a-Thon will be on Saturday, March 1, from 10:30 - 4:30 at the Woodmen of the World Building on Poplar Street in Benton.
March 8: 3rd Glaze-a-Thon will be Saturday, March 8, from 10:30 - 4:30 at Funky Monkey Pottery Studio in the Draffenville Shopping Center.
Join TeamKID at CCUMC
The Calvert City United Methodist Church will begin TeamKID Wednesday nights from 6-7 and Sunday mornings from 10-10:45. The theme of TeamKID is "Jumping the Hurdles" where children will learn how to get over the hurdles in life with God's help. It will be a great time of games and learning about ourselves, others and God. We invite any child in grades kindergarten through fifth grade to join us for TeamKID. Youth advisory Council meeting
March 4: The next meeting of the YSC advisory council will be on Tuesday, March 4, at 11:00 a.m. at North Marshall Middle School. The public is invited to attend.
Community Country Breakfast
March 8: A Community Country Breakfast will be held Saturday, March 8, from 7 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at St. Matthew by the Lake, 3966 U.S. Hwy. 641 N, outside of Draffenville. Join us for a delicious meal of Biscuits and gravy, Eggs, Sausage, Country Ham, Pancakes, Coffee and Juice. Cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 children under 12. We hope you can join us. We serve breakfast the 2nd Saturday of each month. All of our profits go back into the community, i.e. Marcella’s Kitchen, Needline, and Marshall County Rescue Squad.
Little Obie Free Train Rides
March 8: On Saturday March 8, the “Little Obie” miniature train will be available for rides at Paducah Railroad Museum parking lot, from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. “Little Obie” the miniature wheeled train, is operated by the Canadian National Railroad as a railroad safety and information project, and will take children and adults for FREE rides at 200 Washington Street, across from Carson Four Rivers Center.
"Little Obie," travels to festivals and parades all over the U.S. and Canada, and this event is to celebrate the seasonal re-opening of the newly redecorated and remodeled museum. Visitors are encourage to visit the museum at the regular admission of $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children, and view the many interesting exhibits including locomotive simulator, model trains, gift shop, and much more.

Register now for BES 5K
March 8: Benton Elementary School is hosting the first Tomahawk Trot 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, Saturday, March 8, in order to raise funds to benefit the students of BES playground equipment. Get your team and put on your BESt Indian costume and come POW WOW with the BESt Indians around.
5K Event starts 8:30 a.m., at Benton Elementary School. Fun Run/Walk starts at 9 a.m.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. 5K $20 per person, 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk is $10 per person. Register in advance by Feb. 10 to guarantee a t-shirt.
Teams and costumes are encouraged. There will be an overall team, male, female and child costume winner. Also 1st and 2nd place male and female winners for each age division.
We are welcoming businesses to be a sponsor of this event. There are three levels of sponsorships to have your business name on the back of the race shirts. $100 for large font, $75 for medium and $50 for small.

Community Blood Drive
March 10: Monday, at the Calvert City Civic Center, the Red Cross will host a Community Blood Drive sponsored by the City of Calvert City and the Calvert City Lions Club. Donations can be made from 12:00 Noon until 6:00 p.m. and prizes furnished by local businesses will be presented to donors.
Marshall Co Preschool/Head Start
March 11: Marshall County Preschool/Head Start and Early Head Start programs will begin registration March 11, at the Marshall County Preschool/Head Start office.
Eligible children should be residents of Marshall County. Children must be 3 or 4, on or before October 1 , and qualify according to income guidelines. Children with disabilities qualify regardless of income. Early Head Start is for pregnant mothers and children age birth to 3. Families must meet income guidelines to qualify.
Parents or guardians should bring to registration the child’s certified birth certificate, proof of all 2013 income (including child support, disability pay, unemployment, college grants/scholarships, and 1040 tax papers), child’s social security card, and medical card or private insurance card.
Developmental screenings will be held on April 3 , at First United Methodist Church for preschool age children. Please contact the preschool office at 527-2830 to schedule your registration and screening appointments.
Marshall County 4-H Sharp Shooters First Meeting of 2014
March 6: Come and learn more about the Marshall County 4-H Shooting Sports program! The club has certified coaches offering instruction in disciplines such as Archery, Trap, and .22 Rifle. The previous meeting has been re-scheduled for Thursday, March 6, at 6 -7:30 p.m. at the Marshall County Extension Office, 1933 Mayfield Hwy, Benton (Corner of Slickback Road and Mayfield Hwy).
Marshall County youth ages 9-18 as of January 1, 2014 are invited. Parent/guardians are asked to attend with their child. The Draffenville Lions Club Bingo is held every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month. Concessions are available. Opens at 5:30 p.m. starts at 6:00 p.m., at the Draffenville Community Center behind Johnny’s Barber Shop on Hwy. 68.
