Fish Fry/Chili & Tamales Dinner

Feb. 10:  Calvert City VFW Post 5739 and its Ladies Auxiliary will be having their regular monthly fish fry, chili and tamales dinner on February 10, from 5-7 p.m. Fish, hushpuppies, white beans, French fries, cole slaw, or chili with tamales, dessert and a drink for $8. The Post is located off of Hwy. 95 at 68 Veterans Way, ¼ mile from the intersection of Hwy. 95 and 62. Come and enjoy a great meal.

Clarks River NWR Litter Day Clean-up

Feb. 11:  Join us for the 5th Annual Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge Litter Day Clean-Up!

MCHS make up day

Marshall County Schools will be in session on Tuesday, February 21, in order to make up the day missed on January 13.

Sharpe Elementary SBDM meeting

Feb. 14:  The Sharpe Elementary School SBDM Council will meet in regular session on Tuesday, February 14, at 3:45 PM at the school.

MCHS Site Based meeting

Feb. 15:  The Marshall County High School SBDM council’s next meeting will be on February 15 at 3:30 in the school’s library conference room.

Red Cross Blood Drives

Locally, you may give blood on one of the following dates:

Friday, Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marshall County Hospital located at 615 Old Symsonia Road in Benton.

Monday, Feb. 20, from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Central Church of Christ-Benton located at 2081 Mayfield Highway in Benton.

Monday, Feb. 27, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at First Christian Church located at 2515 S. Main St. in Benton.

All presenting donors receive a free ceramic soup mug and spoon set, and a recipe card from celebrity chef Cat Cora, while supplies last.

Public invited to free showing of Courageous at First Christian

Feb. 18:  First Christian Church invites everyone to a FREE movie showing of "Courageous" on Saturday, February 18. Matinee showing at 2:00, evening showing at 7:00. Child Care will be provided. Free popcorn and drinks for everyone. Please bring a canned or non-perishable food item to help stuff the Benton squad car that will be here during the movies. Items will be donated to The Marshall County Needline. Located at 2515 S. Main Street in Benton, across from Save-A-Lot.

Heart Health Fair 

Feb. 25:  Western Baptist Hospital will offer free screenings during a Heart Health Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 25, in the atrium of Doctors Office Building 2.

 

Western Baptist staff will provide free blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and EKG rhythm strip screenings, as well as heart-healthy information. Fasting and advance registration are not required. Click here for details.

Golf News at KY State Parks

Ky State Park golf courses now has winter daily rates as well as overnight golf packages. The “Chip Shot” golf package, which includes overnight lodging and 18 holes of golf with a golf cart, starts at $59 plus tax per person based on double occupancy. The rate is effective through March 31, 2012. The popular, all-inclusive “Tee’s and Zzz’s” package includes lodging, breakfast, dinner, 18 holes with golf cart, gift card, and preferred tee times. Winter package rates start $89 plus tax per person, double occup. through March 31, 2012. Daily winter rate greens fees range from $11 to $17 weekdays and $11 to $22 weekends (golf cart not included) through March 31, 2012. Doors of Mercy Mission

Doors of Mercy Mission, 2 Prince Lane, Gilbertsville is open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. The Mission supplies clothing for men, women and children as well as household items. Donations and offerings are accepted daily. For more information call 270-921-4035.

Boating Skills & Seamanship

Feb. 11, 18, 25:  The Kuttawa Flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a safe boating course entitled "Boating Skills And Seamanship" at the Lyon County Library, 261 Commerce Street in Eddyville, KY. The course will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on three, consecutive Saturdays. The dates are February 11, 18, and 25, 2012. The cost for this 24-hour course is $30.

Empty Bowl Project set for April

Marcella’s Community Kitchen announces The Empty Bowl Project, helping to feed people in need right here in Marshall County, will be a taste of Marshall County’s finest restaurants and catering services. Pre ticket sales will be $15 and door price will be $18. The Empty Bowl Project, is scheduled for April 14, 2012 at Marshall County High School Commons Area from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. To start off this event we are asking for the community to either donate glass or ceramic bowls off of their kitchen shelves, bowls they haven’t used in a long while and don’t need. You can drop the bowls off at Marcella’s Kitchen or call Grace Forte at 270-205-0223 or stop by the Funky Monkey Pottery Company in Draffenville Shopping Plaza, two doors down from Parcels Deli. The goal is to collect 600 bowls. Tickets sales will begin February 1, 2012 at Marcella’s Kitchen, WCBL, the Funky Monkey or call Grace Forte 270-205-0223.

Wayside Choir from Louisville, KY is scheduled to sing at the Empty Bowl Project.

Marshall County Hospital meetings

The Marshall County Hospital Board of Trustees will meet at 12:00 noon in the hospital conference room on the following dates in 2012:  February 7, March 6, April 3, May 8, June 5, July 10, August 7, September 4, October 2, November 6, and December 4.

LIBRARY FUN:

The Young Adult Advisory Panel of the Marshall County Public Libraries, consists of teens ages 13-18 and they participate in a variety of events and activities at both Benton and Calvert libraries. AWANA Clubs at First Baptist Church in Calvert City 

Weekly:  The First Baptist Church of Calvert City AWANA Clubs meet on Sunday evenings, from 5:45-7:15 p.m. AWANA – is a fun and exciting program for children from Kindergarten through 6th grade. Participants will earn both AWANA uniforms as well as special progress awards. They will enjoy games each night, participate in special theme nights, and they have the opportunity for each to earn prizes. AWANA Clubs at Pathway Baptist in Calvert City

Weekly:  Pathway Baptist Church Awana Clubs is an exciting children’s club for children 2 years old through 6th grade. We meet every Wednesday night during the school year and would love to have your child come and be a part of a fun club for children. They get uniforms, earn awards, have theme nights and games. Al-Anon meetings

Weekly:  The local Al-Anon meeting is held each Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Benton Church of Christ South of Benton on 641 for any additional info call 703-2700.

Lions Club Bingo 1st & 3rd Tuesdays

Enjoy Bingo at the Draffenville Community Center on Griggstown Road, the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The Draffenville Lions host bingo as a fundraiser with all profits going to charity. Doors open at 5:30 with games starting at 6:30 allowing players to enjoy a snack from the kitchen.

Compassionate Friends support group held monthly in Grand Rivers

Monthly:  Every 3rd Tuesday.  If you have LOST A CHILD of any age, a new support group has been formed in Grand Rivers, KY. Loved ones are invited to attend the group on the third Tuesday of each month, except December will be held Held from 7-9 p.m. at the Grand Rivers Community and Senior Center, 155 W Cumberland Ave, one block west of J.H. O'Bryan Avenue and behind 1st KY bank.
