Purchase Parkway connection to Calvert City to end

(Filed June 17, 2014)

A new design for the intersection of I-24 and Purchase Parkway to accommodate the changes I-69 will end traveling to Calvert City at U.S. Hwy. 62 directly on the Purchase Parkway.

According to one local source the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will present two different redesigns to the I-24 and Purchase Parkway intersection at a meeting scheduled by the transportation cabinet on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 5 p.m. in the Calvert City Civic Center and both those plans will eliminate the stretch of Purchase Parkway from the intersection to Calvert City.

The proposed change in the Purchase Parkway will affect hundreds if not thousands of commuters every day as well as large amounts of commercial traffic.

The new design will force traffic to use the intersection at I-24 and U.S. Highway 62 some distance further east of the present Purchase Parkway and U.S. Hwy. 62 interchange or use Hwy. 95 from U.S. High 68 as north bound traffic to Calvert City did before the construction of Purchase Parkway.

According to a legal notice published by the cabinet in The Lake News the meeting will be informal and people will be allowed to view the proposed plans and ask questions. There will also be comment form made available at the meeting so people can make written comments about the proposed designs.

No information about the design changes was included in the legal notice from the cabinet. The only pre-meeting information about the plan included a map showing the area on I-24 and Purchase Parkway to be impacted by the re-design. That map shows an area that begins well west of the KY. 95 overpass on I-24 and extends to the eastern edge of the I-24 and U.S. Hwy. 62 intersection.

There is no mention in the cabinet’s public notice of improvements to U.S. Hwy. 62 in Calvert City or to KY 95 to handle the increase in traffic on either U.S. Hwy. 62 or KY 95 that could result from the changes.
